Effects Of The North American Free Trade Agreement On Corn...
The Effects of the North American Free Trade Agreement on Corn Trade between the United States and Mexico Prerna Gait ID: 4299385 ECON 3951 ââ¬â Senior Project Abstract: This paper examines the impact of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) on corn trade between US and Mexico since 1994. NAFTA had a great impact on corn trade between US and Mexico mainly because of trade liberalization which enabled US to increase its corn exports to Mexico. This paper closely looks at how the implementation of NAFTA and the United States corn subsidies led to a decrease in the Mexican corn prices, which further led to the out-migration of people working in the Mexican agriculture sector to the urban sector. Introduction: Onâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Essential ideas: As mentioned earlier, the biggest motivation for NAFTAââ¬â¢s existence was to promote trade liberalization and prosperity by creating a free trade zone between US, Mexico, and Canada. Agriculture sector was the most affected by NAFTAââ¬â¢s implementation, propelling small-scale Mexican farmers to compete against large-scale US farmers. US corn subsidies led to the Mexican markets being flooded with cheap and unsubsidized corn which lead to the displacement of Mexican agricultural population to the cities. The US Mexico corn trade demonstrates how trade and migration can be complements instead of substitutes if the main reason for trade is differences in technology. According to the Heckscher-Ohlin model, the relationship between trade and migration is that of the substitution type due to the Factor-price equalization theorem. (Samelson, 1948) However, what we observe in this paper is that corn trade contrasted with this trade theory. ââ¬Å"In standard Heckscher-Ohlin trade th eory, capital-rich country will impose labor-intensive goods from labor-rich country S. Trade liberalization shifts additional production of labor-intensive goods from labor-rich country S and capital-intensive goods to country N. These production shifts inturn put upward pressure on country S wages, discouraging emigrationâ⬠(NAFTA Revisited: Achievements and Challenges, 1997). Effects of NAFTA: NAFTA had a huge

Legal And Social Acknowledgement Of Corporal Punishment
There are numerous contributory factors to child physical abuse, one of which is a legal and social acknowledgement of corporal punishment supported by cultural norms in several countries. In the name of discipline maintenance, spanking, hitting or beating, as common forms of physical punishment, are generally believed to be effective in behaviour and action management. In the U.S, it is considered acceptable and legitimate to spank or slap a child at the age of 12 (Straus et al., 1980; cited in Starr, 1988). According to WHO (2002), in Egypt, shaking, pinching and slapping are common punitive measures. Rural Indian parents are recorded to slap their children on head, face and buttocks very often (WHO, 2002). Despite a fine line separating punishment and abuse, the boundary is likely to be overlapped frequently. Researchers have substantiated an association between severe punishment and physical victimization (Frà ©chette, Zoratti Romano, 2015; Zoloto, 2014). It is indicated that t he more recurring and continual punishment is, the more extreme and drastic it tends to be, satisfying the physical abuse clarification (Belsky 1993; Gershoff 2002a; Straus and Stewart 1999; Zolotor et al. 2008; cited in Frà ©chette, Zoratti Romano, 2015). Moreover, parentsââ¬â¢ dependency on corporal punishment caused by the gradual ineffectiveness of non-physical or moderate methods (Graziano, 1994; McCord, 1996; cited in Frontes, 2005) can probably result in the utilization of instruments (Miller Show MoreRelatedThe Behavioral Definition of Punishment1907 Words à |à 8 PagesThis paper will provide the behavioral definition of punishment and give examples of both positive and negative punishment in different types of settings. Christopher Marlowe s The Tragical History Of The Life...
After the centuries of the Dark Ages, Europe began to rise from the dirt and social troubles into a modern civilization full of art and knowledge. The era of Renaissance shone above the peninsula of Italy and continuously moved to Western Europe and England. The era of reawakening began and the modern world started developing rapidly. In the 16th century, a playwright, poet and translator, Christopher Marlowe, decided to reach out even further than an ordinary human experience. In the age of social, scientific and cultural rebirth, Marlowe examined the possibilities and consequences of reaching out the most from knowledge, power and wealth. In the play, The Tragical History of the Life and Death of Doctor Faustus, the main protagonist, Dr. Faustus, sick and tired of the limited abilities of any human individual trades his soul with the lord of the hell, Lucifer, for 24 years of limitless power, liberty and knowledge. Faustus travels around the world, unconscious about his destiny, an d enjoys all of the worldly and sensual pleasures. Unfortunately, in the end, when Faustus finally realizes his fate and begs for forgiveness from God, the demons drags Doctor into the flames of hell. Through the development of the play, Christopher Marlowe illustrates Dr. Faustus metamorphosis from an ambitious ââ¬Å"supermanâ⬠to a fragile and frail person, who falsely believes that owns the power above his surroundings. Preventing Infection While Inserting Central free essay sample
The most common infection is the central line associated blood stream infection (CLABSI). The risk is greater when the central intravenous line is in place for a longer period of time, especially when the catheter is not maintained appropriately or when there is a leakage of IV fluid into the tissues. Inserting a central intravenous line is a sterile procedure so it is a nurseââ¬â¢s responsibility to minimize the risk of infections. Health care-associated infections increase the length of hospitalization, hospital cost, patient discomfort, and morbidity and mortality rates (OGrady Pearson, 2002). Thus, it is important for health care professional and nurses to be responsible for knowing their roles and how to use maximum sterile barriers while placing central venous catheters. According to the Agency for Healthcare and Research Quality (AHRQ), there are many practices healthcare professionals should follow to prevent CLABSI (Marschall, 2008). Maximum sterile barriers are one of the essential practices when inserting central venous catheters to prevent catheter-related bloodstream infections, which are observed in a patient care scenario that occurred in the neonatal intensive care unit. We will write a custom essay sample on Preventing Infection While Inserting Central or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Jenkins is a former 30 weeks-premature male infant born with respiratory distress and placed on a ventilator. He later developed bowel distention and could not tolerate formula. He was started on a course of antibiotics and was given nothing by mouth (NPO). Infant was then started on total parenteral nutrition (TPN) and intralipids (IL) via peripheral intravenous line. Upper gastrointestinal X-rays were done and showed bowel perforation, so a pediatric surgeon was consulted for bowel surgery. It was found that the infant had exploratory laparotomy and bowel resection. Thus, the infant remained on NPO and total parenteral nutrition and intralipids continued to be administered. Due to long term needs of intravenous fluids (IVF), it was difficult to maintain the intravenous site, so the infant needed a CVC. Initially, a peripheral inserted central catheter line was unsuccessfully attempted three times by a nurse practitioner. The pediatric surgeon was consulted for the second time to surgically place a CVC for long term IVF fluids replacement. Before the patient went for the procedure, all health care personnel were responsible in following the recommended AHRQ guidelines to prevent an infection from occurring. This would include the monitoring of central line insertion before and after central line management with ongoing maintenance care (Marschall, 2008). Before Insertion: All nurses would be educated on the risk factors of CLABSI and proper maintenance of the central line, such as administration of medication, IV tubing changes, and dressing changes, according to their hospitalââ¬â¢s policies and protocols. Nursesââ¬â¢ competencies would be reviewed on an annual basis, and nurses would verify that consulting surgeons or the trained staff is competent to do surgical central line insertions to make sure preventative measures are taken to bypass potential infections (Marschall, 2008). Parents would also be educated on risk factors before the CVC is inserted to learn how certain sterile techniques, such as cleaning hands with alcohol-based rub or soap and water, prevent infections. At Insertion: A catheter checklist is utilized to make sure all measures are taken to prevent infection when the CVC is inserted. Proper sterile barriers are implemented: a mask prevents infection from any talking and coughing that may occur; a hat prevents hair from falling; and sterile gown and gloves keep any microorganisms that may be on your hands and clothes from crossing the sterile barrier (Raad, Hanna, Maki, 2007). A sterile drape should cover the patient to provide additional protection against possible infection. Traffic is reduced around the sterile field, and a designated nurse observes that aseptic techniques are maintained during the procedure, reporting any changes in the aseptic technique. Gloves are used only after hands are washed with alcohol-based rub. Chlorhexidine is used on patients older than 32 weeks of age because further research is needed on the alternative effects on the skin. Povidine-iodine is used for patients under the age of 32 weeks. (Miller-Hoover Small, 2009). After Insertion: The catheter needs to be reevaluated on a daily basis to prevent infection. Nurse must use sterile maximum barriers when administering medication through the catheter injection port, changing IV tubing, and change dressing. Central venous catheters are usually cared and maintained by nurses, so nurses are accountable for following all the sterile technique measures when administering medications, changing IV tubing, and changing dressing (Sharpe, 2009). Nurses must assess the needs of the catheter on a routine basis to prevent CLABSI. Without proper care, a catheter can cause the development of sepsis, which leads to a spike in the mortality rate. Nurses are accountable for proper documentation of the central line site for skin integrity. In addition, nurses and other health care professionals must have good sanitary hygiene and create a sterile environment when interacting with patients. Preventing CLABSI all starts with proper care by healthcare professionals, but it also occurs as nurses educate the patients, their families, and their fellow peers on how to avoid infection. In conclusion, central venous catheters are one of the leading causes of infection in hospitals. The AHRQ has published guidelines and regulations to help nurses in their responsibilities to treat patients. These guidelines include the use of a catheter checklist, sufficient training of the nursing staff, and most importantly, and the creation of a maximum sterile barrier for the patient. Using the correct antiseptic based on age of the infant and proper hygiene by health professionals can make a large difference in hospitals where patients are prone to infections. Overall, it is the nurseââ¬â¢s responsibility to prevent infection by maintaining a sterile environment with a mask, cap, patient drape, and other barriers. With proper care and diligence, patient safety becomes an utmost priority.

Kingdom Essays - Allah, Deities, God, Infinity,
Kingdom Of God The "Kingdom of God" is a commonly used phrase in the Christian community. It rolls off the tongue of believers worldwide, yet the meaning of this dominant idiom is rarely explained. What exactly is the "kingdom of God?" What does it mean to be apart of God's kingdom? These inquiries gnaw at the heart and soul of every believer, and the principles shared by Pastor Chad Hyatt have successfully provided answers. The word kingdom can be divided into two words - the king's domain. Of course, as Christians, God(and, or Jesus) is our king. This then implies that we, believers, are Christ's subjects. We are God's domain. Therefore, the kingdom of God is not "abstract or immaterial," but very real and living - heavy with a purpose to carry out. The words king's domain imply the act of ruling. We can therefore draw the conclusion that Christ in us rules our hearts, and that we are his domain or place of rule. It was mentioned earlier that the kingdom of God has a purpose to carry out. This purpose encompasses many things. It includes the recruitment of the others into the kingdom and carrying out the heart and will of the king, or God. This definition and explanation of the kingdom of God brings its purpose to one final word: INFLUENCE. God said that we are to be "salt and light." The King has commissioned his domain to attend church, read the Bible, and to pray in order to train so that we may be able to "compete" with Satan in the world. We must train ourselves in order to influence, so that we may recruit. This is truly serving our king, which is the purpose behind salvation. In essence of how Pastor Chad Hyatt relates it, the kingdom of God is in us. It is where the king rules. It is who the king rules. It is how the king conducts his rule. When altogether stated, the kingdom is us.

Nursing shortage - Research Paper Example The nurse also helps a patient in the carrying out of the therapeutic activities instructed by the physician. The nurse works as a part of a team with others. Together they help in running the program for recovery and improvement to health. They as support those who are dying to appreciate the transition and attain peace of mind. These roles bring out the crucial aspects in nursing. Further, they show the relationship that exists between a nurse and a patient (Feldman, 2011). The nurse and the system of nursing exist within regulated structures. This is essential because of the support that has in terms of resource allocation and credibility. Nursing operates within the health care system, which is changing rapidly. Thus, the stability of nursing depends on proper organization delivering of care, regulated practice for quality assurance and adequate preparation of the nursing profession. This outline is to give a peek into the gap left when we suffer a shortage in the nursing profession (Rosseter, 2012). In May, the year 2011, the recruitment agencies and employers posted over 121,000 ads for nursing positions (Stiger et al, 2009). This was a 46% increase in the demand of the nurse from the previous year 2010. In March, this year (2012), Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that 20% of the total job vacancies were from the healthcare institutions. This clearly shows the trend that employment vacancies are taking. The need for more professional registered nurse is rising every day (Feldman, 2011). In addition, annual rate of turnover of registered nurses is at 14% as per the report by KPMG survey 2012. Professional nursing as an occupation shows the highest tendency of growth. Projects show that the number of employed nurse will increase from 2.8 million to 3.5 million by the year 2020. This growth will partly be contributed by the retirement of about 0.5 million nurses. The shortage of nurses is going to persist in unless we find a lasting

Choose a business function (e.g. marketing HR finance) and outline and Essay - 1
Choose a business function (e.g. marketing HR finance) and outline and discuss the changing nature of work and employment in thi - Essay Example The project tries to explore the key influential factors resulting in such changes with emphasis on the challenges faced by the human resource management departments on organizations. External Factors influencing the changing nature of human resource management practices Few of the major factors that have been undergoing dramatic changes in the global scenario have been increasingly posing threat towards organizations. Consequently their business needs have also undergone changes. Technological factors, the economic challenges, and changes in the local and governmental issues are some of the key factors worth mentioning in this context. Workforce diversities, unions and political factors have also been responsible towards changing the human resource management practices in organizations. Predominantly the organization structure and culture has demonstrated changes. Globalization has generated different forms of human resource management functions in the global competitive environment . Firms which have been competing in the global competitive environment have been facing with numerous new demands on their people and their organizations. They also seem to be pushed into different and contradictory directions. In response to this, new global organizing paradigms are concentrated on the complementarities, and not on the trade-offs, on management processes, not on the organizational structures and procedures. It demonstrates a shift away from the static and traditional solutions to the global business challenges towards the acceptance of global organizations as being an evolving and dynamic network (Pucik, ââ¬Å"Human Resources: An Obstacle to Globalization?â⬠). The changing economic environment has also driven changes in the human resource management practices in firms. With the increasing significance and presence of the MNCs as being crucial players of the global economy, there has also been an increasing interest on the concept of international human resou rce management of these MNCs. In spite of the growing importance of this IHRM as being one of the most innovative sources of competitive advantage, there has been very little research on ways to manage the globally dispersed mass of employees belonging to the MNCs effectively. A number of studies have been conducted by the application of greater theory driven conceptual frameworks, for better understanding of the multinational corporations and the international human resources management practices undertaken in them. Following are some of the findings from the results. Firstly the general result that followed is that the human resource management practices remain localized to reflect the differences in the cultural and regulatory environments between the host and the home countries. This primarily throws light on the fact that these multinational organizations require modifying their parent human resource management practices in the overseas subsidiaries in order to achieve a degree of isomorphism with the environmental institutions of the host countries (Kim & Gray, ââ¬Å"Summary, limitations and suggestions for further researchâ⬠). Recently organizations are also faced with the growing challenge of confronting and managing workforce diversities. The shifting business realities and the social and demographic changes have increased the workforce diversi

Ground Water in Dhaka City Essay Example for Free
Ground Water in Dhaka City Essay Dhaka is the capital city of Bangladesh which has a population of about 12. 5 millions and its population rate is over 5%. Projected population is about 22 million by 2025. Dhaka is now the 7th largest populated city in the world and it is anticipated that Dhaka will be the 2nd largest city in the world by 2020. This city is full of problem and one of the major problems is water crisis. Although Bangladesh is rich in water resource, but there remains lack of safe water. The cities in Bangladesh are the centre of employment, communications and development. So, people are rapidly migrating in these cities from rural areas place putting additional pressure on the infrastructure and water resources. For this huge population in Dhaka city, water demand is also huge. And maximum portion of this greater demand is fulfilled by ground water. The daily requirement of water in Dhaka city is about 200 crore liters while WASA supplies 180 crore liters, leaving a shortage of 20 crore liters. Out of this 180 crore liters of water, 154. 50 crore liters of water are supplied from ground water. All most 85%-87% of water is supplied from under the ground and of them are from surface water. To supply this massive amount of water we need to extract a lot from the ground. Everyday demand for water is increasing and we are adding new pumps. In 1998, there were only 243 water pumps to lift water in 2004 it was 440 but now it is 560. Each of the pumps lifts 3,000 liters of water in a minute. And this is also making some problems. For this heavy extraction water level is going down rapidly. In some statistics I have found that the level of underground water has dropped down to 61. 18 meters. The average rate of decline of water level varied from 1 m to 2. 50 as the report of DWDB. Ground water depletion situation is severe in the central part of the city compare to the areas close to river bank, says DWDB. If this continue to happen then in future it will be hard to lift up underground water. Moreover, the increasing number of pumps and subsequent depletion of groundwater table increases the risk of disasters like landslide, subsidence and earthquake.

Discuss the similarities and differences between ?new terrorism? and th
Pantha rei ââ¬â as it was stated by the Greek philosopher, Heraclites of Ephesus (sixth and fifth centuries B.C.) ââ¬â everything flows, everything changes. Change in the contemporary world is an extremely fast process. Nothing remains the same as it was in the past. In political science especially, some notions (e.g. sovereignty) demand redefinition. The changing nature of all things also includes the political concept of terrorism. The official approach to this changing terrorism is rather complicated. The terrorist of yesterday is the hero of today, and the hero of yesterday becomes the terrorist of today . There is then a great need to know what contemporary terrorism is and what it is not. Terrorism is a calculated use of power to achieve a political change, thus violence ââ¬â or equally important, the threat of violence ââ¬â is used and directed in pursuit of, or in service of a political aim . Terrorism is an expression of political strategy, a willful choice made by an organization for political and strategic reasons (efficacy) rather than as the unintended outcome of psychological or social factors . However, terrorism is difficult to define because the meaning of the term has changed so frequently over the past 200 years. It has morphed from positive connotation during the French Revolution (closely associated with the ideals of virtue and democracy ), through the revolutionary movement and finally to a religiously motivated act as it is mainly perceived today. Nevertheless, we have to ask ourselves whether ââ¬Å"oldâ⬠and ââ¬Å"newâ⬠terrorism really exists, or maybe the phenomenon we are facing today reminds us an old wine in a new bottle. Two questions frame the discussed issue: 1.à à à à à What is the nature of ââ¬Å"newâ⬠terrorism? 2.à à à à à What is the magnitude of threat of ââ¬Å"newâ⬠terrorism? ââ¬Å"Oldâ⬠and ââ¬Å"newâ⬠terrorism are distinguishable in five points, as the table below shows . Old Terrorismà à à à à New Terrorism Ideologicalà à à à à Vague or religious motivations Hierarchicalà à à à à Unorganized (lone wolf, ad hoc) therefore more difficult to penetrate Propaganda by deed (bringing issue to the table)à à à à à More violent (killing for the sake of killing) Sub-nationalà à à à à Transnational and International (global... ...uld be considered more dangerous. The new rules of an old game make it more lethal and unpredictable. Let us examine only one example: Nearly every terrorist group in Iraq has recently captured a foreigner but additionally, they have produced an accompanying video, where a list of demands is outlined, a deadline is set, hostages plea for their lives, and in several instances, they are killed by beheading. Then these kidnappings merge a technique of ââ¬Å"oldâ⬠terrorism in service of ââ¬Å"newâ⬠style terrorism. Furthermore, now more than ever, the media are a tool of war. These dramas were broadcasted by the media all over the world. This is how the media helps to evolve terrorism ââ¬â they send the terrorist a clear although unspoken message: to maintain access to the airwaves, you need to devise even more outrageous tactics. Thus, the new ââ¬Å"globalâ⬠terrorist, caught into the trap of globalization, will have to break more rules, cross more psychological borders, and crack more taboos in order to exist. This can be considered the most dangerous feature of the ââ¬Å"newâ⬠terrorism ââ¬â not only do we not know when the next attack will strike, we either have no idea what actually is going to happen .
